RSVP Volunteer Spotlight Gene Filbeck How do you volunteer as a Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) participant? I volunteer at the Rock Island Food Bank. When my Mom, Betty Filbeck, started managing the Rock Island Food Bank, my wife and I moved back home to help. It is good that we did because the property that the food pantry was on was going to be sold. We had to find a new home or close, in a hurry. All of us in the pantry literally went to stores asking for building supplies to be donated for a food pantry. I am a contractor, so I could build it to save on labor costs. We got lucky and received over $8,500 worth of materials from Home Depot and people volunteered to help. Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council helped my mom and our team of volunteers to advocate for help, and before you knew it the Rock Island Food Bank secured a new home with support from the City of Rock Island and others, including Jon Port. We even received more support later to double the size of our food pantry! Rock Island is one of those food banks where everybody receives a hug and a warm greeting. and you are known by your first name. It is all about family there. Betty Filbeck started a tradition and Gail and I have carried it on. Why do you volunteer with RSVP? To serve people. I don't like the idea of people going hungry and I want to do whatever I can to help prevent that. I am a carpenter by trade so my skills have come in very handy over the past years at our food bank Do you have a message to share? Gene has a quote, "A hungry family is not a happy family.
