RSVP Volunteer Spotlight Collette Shrader How do you volunteer as a Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) participant? I started volunteering with Community Action's Wenatchee Empty Bowls event during the fall of 2016 when I was still working at Confluence Health Empty Bowls educates the public about food insecurity and the Green Bag program is kind of a continuation of that education, it is a simple way to help. Sal started promoting the Green Bag program throughout the clinic and hospital departments. I have more time to spend doing this now that I am retired. The Food Distribution Center has collected 11,436 lbs. from Confluence Health as of July 2023! The Green Bag program brings extra food to the Food Distribution Center for area food pantries (there are 12 food pantries and 5 meal programs supported). The Green Bag program involves giving volunteer donors a green bag to take home and every time that they grocery shop they buy an extra item or two to put in the green bag. Then, at the end of every two months, RSVP Volunteers pick up the full bag and leave an empty green bag for the donor to start filling. It is a way to get food in the food pantries throughout the whole year. We receive quality, relevant food this way because volunteer donors hand- pick the items according to a list given to them in the bags. This program has been going on for 8 years. averaging around 20.000 pounds a year. Our RSVP volunteers love doing this, and it is so easy for the community to do Why do you volunteer with RSVP? I am passionate about helping with food insecurity.
